20 Amazing Things to do in China
1. Kaiping Fortress Towers
The first thing on my list of amazing things to do in China is the Kaiping Fortress Towers. The fortress towers are easy to get to from Kaiping, which is in Guangdong. Kaiping itself is also a good town (better than I had expected) as is Chikan which is close by.
2. Long Jin Tea Fields
The Long Jin tea fields are in Hangzhou. It’s a nice walk through them and you can pick up some of the famous tea while you are there. Hangzhou also had a great blind massage place for only 50rmb per hour.
3. Lishui Rice Terraces
The Lishui Rice Terraces are in Yunhe. There are other rice terraces around, but this is the one I went to. It could have been the time of year, but we had the place to ourselves.
4. Beixi Mudflats
Located in Xiapu, this was a bit remote, but still quite accessible. If you are a ‘photographer’, you’ll want to go there for sunset.
5. Luoping Canola Fields
The Luoping canola fields are a few bus rides from Kunming, but worth the ‘trouble’. Make sure you go at the right time of year.
6. Benxi Water Caves
The Benxi Water Caves are in Liaoning. I met a local couple off couch-surfers which made getting to them much easier. Take a boat ride through the caves, then go for a bit of a hike.
7. Panjin Red Beach
The Panjin Red Beach was also in Liaoning. Of all the things on this list of amazing things to do in China, this is the one I had the most trouble getting to. I was unhappy with it at the start but surprised at the end.
8. Great Wall of China
How can there be a list of amazing things to do in China without mentioning the Great Wall of China. I went to the most tourist visited one (Badaling), because it is the easiest to get to. Even though there were loads of people there (as expected) it was still amazing.
You can get to the Great Wall of China from Beijing, and Beijing itself has a ton of amazing things to do. I could have put a few more of them on this list.
9. Terracotta Warriors
This is the only thing on this list of amazing things to do in China that I didn’t actually do. I went to Xian with the intention of doing it, but I guess it was not mean to be.
Technically part of China but not at all like the mainland, Macau is like a mini Las Vegas. I’m not big on casinos but you have to try the egg tarts which were invented in Macau.
11. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is where the stone columns in the movie Avatar are from. When I went it rained for the two days I was there but it was still amazing.
12. Danxia Landforms
The Danxia Landforms are breath-taking. These might be the best pictures I have ever taken (I am in no way a photographer) and they are all taken on my phone.
Mati Si temple grottoes while you are in the area.
Kashgar in Xinjiang may be the least Chinese city in China. Xinjiang people have their own language and very distinct culture. Kashgar may be the only working Ancient city that has not been “refurbished” in China.
14. Go to a Bath House
The Chinese Bath Houses are not as good as in South Korea, but they are definitely worth a try. Go on, pamper yourself.
15. Hulunbuir Grasslands
The Hulunbuir Grasslands is a vast expanse of open flat grasslands. Have horse ride or frolic at will.
Manzhouli is a town on the border of China and Russia located in Inner Mongolia. The mix of the three cultures makes it a unique city.
18. Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge
Dandong is the border town of China and North Korea. The Sino-Korean Friendship bridge links the two countries. The contrast of the bright lights of China to the darkness of North Korean is really something.
How could I have a list of amazing things to do in China without mentioning all the amazing food. Almost every province is famous for some type of cooking. Even some cities have their own special dishes.
20. Visit the Famous Cities
If I listed all the famous cities in China this list would be twice as long so this last item is to visit the famous cities. There a lot of them. Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu, and many more!
