4 Amazing Things to do in Antigua, Guatemala

1. Stay in a Antigua Homestay

As soon as we got to Antigua a guy who says he was a volunteer for the tourist board came up to us and told us a little about accommodations and the city. According to him, sleeping at a home-stay is one of the amazing things to do in Antigua.

He took us to a home-stay a few blocks up from the station. 60GMQ a night + 40GMQ for 3 cooked meals.

The home-stay was nice as were the meals. There were two other guests and it was nice to have a sit down dinner with them and, I think, the daughter of the household. I’m unsure of how many people actually lived there but they all seemed nice.

Note: The packed breakfast (for climbing Volcano Pacaya) was dismal, but all the cooked meals were amazing.

Antigua is quite a tourist town so things are a little more pricey but still cheap enough. Safe and quaint with cobblestone roads and markets. We we’re lucky it was the low season so it wasn’t not very busy.

3. Climbing Volcano Pacaya

Volcano Pacaya is an active volcano in Antigua, which you can climb. It is probably the most popular of the amazing things to do in Antigua, Guatemala.

The guy that took us to the home-stay also talked us into a volcano tour for 120GMQ.

We woke up at 0530 to get the bus to climb Volcano Pacaya. The bus ride was about two hours and there was a couple more tourists with us. The hike up Volcano Pacaya was 3km. It was fine. We ended up paying 70GMQ to the guide and 50GMQ entry. There was the option of taking a horse up but the hike and pace was not difficult i.e. kids were doing it.

4. Roast Marsh-mellows in a Volcano

The Volcano was cool. We toasted marshmallows and the guide told us some stuff about the recent history of it. He spoke in Spanish but it was slow and clear so it was good.

Getting to Antigua From Coban

To get to Antigua from Coban we went to the Monja Blanca bus station. From there we paid 50GMQ each for a bus to Guatemala City (the only place they go to). We thought we where going to get on a standard bus but it turned out to be another minivan. Jake had a lady sleep on him (again) and as always, there where a few close calls. It took about five-and-a-half hours to get to Guatemala city as opposed to the originally quoted four. This seems to be a running theme.

The mountains of Guatemala are spectacular and there was a lot of birds of prey flying around as we drove passed the mountain villages. I would love to spend some more time in the Guatemalan country side. We didn’t stop to look in Guatemala City, and I’m not really a fan of big cities, but if you are a city lover than I hear Guatemala city is a vibrant and exiting one to visit.

Straight off the bus we caught a cab for 10GMQ each to take us to the Chicken bus to Antigua. It was supposed to be 50 minutes but I think it was more like 90. This chicken bus was more like the ones I had heard about i.e. funkily painted and they just keep cramming people on. It cost 10GMQ to get from Guatemala City to Antigua.

Next Stop… San Salvador
We only stayed in San Salvador for one night, but it was awesome.
