Hiking in Matagalpa, Nicaragua

Featured, Hiking in Matagalpa Nicaragua. Survive Travel

My favorite thing to do while living in Matagalpa was to go hiking. There aren’t any “famous” hikes in Mataglapa… not even close. But hiking is hiking, and the little town is surrounded by nature. There are some good walks if you don’t mind getting a little adventurous.

Hiking in Matagalpa, Nicaragua

The first time we went hiking in Matagalpa was for a bit of a reconnaissance. We went for a walk a bit further up the river near our place. We didn’t want to go too far due to the sun going down but luckily we decided to take a look around one last bend. What we saw was an impressive rocky outcrop that had possibilities for bouldering.

We set off about 0930 in the morning with my survival kit, water, and peanut butter and banana sandwiches.

After about 15 minutes of walking down the river, we came across a really cool waterfall.

Further up we got attacked by some insects and had to jump in the water.

Taking a dip to get away from the attacking insects. Nice place for it actually.

We continued on and started to veer inland across farms and over fences. We got to the outcrop around 1130, did a quick walk around then chilled out for lunch.

To avoid trespassing and where the boys got bitten, we opted for a different way home. It worked out pretty perfect. We had to cross a few properties but got onto a road. Then we followed a stream which spat us a couple of minutes before the waterfall.

Unfortunately, the waterfall was full of locals so we took a dip in a little pool further downstream. After that, we started home and ran into some torrential rain. It continued for a long time after we finally got back.

We did do a couple more hikes in Matagalpa but this one was my favorite. There was some awesome scenery, some horses, and a great view from the top. It had rivers, a waterfall, and local villages. It was a great day out.
