7 Cool Things to do in Memphis
I caught an overnight bus so I made it to Memphis in the morning and hiked it straight to Graceland from the bus station. I can’t remember directions exactly but it was about a half-hour trek.
Once there I bought the Platinum tour for $37 and spent about half a day exploring it. Graceland was awesome and it deserves the #1 spot on my list of cool things to do in Memphis.
2. Sun Studios
From Graceland, I caught a cab to Sun Studios which cost me $30. It only cost $20 for a Hop on Hop off Bus and would have been cheaper still on a regular bus… but it was a Sunday and I hadn’t researched the bus routes.
The Sun Studios Tour was $12 + tax and tip. It was a very good tour. The guide was awesome.
3. Beale Street
After Sun Studios I went to my accommodation for a nap, then headed to Beale Street for dinner. I had cajun shrimp with a 32-ounce draft beer at the Blues Cafe. Somewhat pricey but delicious. I also checked out Green Bug and the Soul Cafe.
4. Walk Along the Mississippi River
The next morning I took a walk along the Mississippi River. A great free activity.
5. Eat at the Tea Room
After my walk, I ate at The Tea Room. I recommend it as it serves Memphis specialties. It is only open for lunch from 11 am till 2 pm daily. Get Lilly’s special. I had a special chicken and it was awesome.
5. Rock and Blues Museum
After lunch, I visited the Rock and Blues Museum. I’m a big music fan so it was a treat.
6. Gibson Guitar Factory
Across the road from the Rock and Blues Museum is the Gibson Guitar factory. I didn’t go in but if you are a guitar fan, or if you have some spare time, it is probably worth checking out.
7. Walk Through the Neighbourhoods
This last thing on my list of amazing Amazing things to do in Memphis might only be for the more adventurous.
After the Rock and Blues Museum, I walked to Overton square, which was unimpressive. Then I hiked to the airport. The entire trek took me about 4 hours. It was good to see the neighborhoods.
Getting From Asheville (NC) to Memphis by Greyhound
I caught an overnight Greyhound from Asheville to Memphis. The Greyhound is always an interesting journey. It arrived 40 minutes late and they oversell tickets so you have to be quick in line to get a seat.
My first transfer went fine but for the second one, I didn’t have a re-boarding pass. To avoid this, make sure you approach the bus driver before getting on. They still let me on, but it was a hassle.
