What is the Travelers Spirit?

What is the Travelers Spirit?

What is the travelers spirit? Well I Google’d it and all I got was stuff about astro-travel. Not what I had in mind, so I’m having a crack of defining it myself.

I figure the best way is to just write what comes into my head when I’m thinking of it.. so the following is what flows from my mind, into the keyboard, unedited rants.

It’s hard to explain what the Travelers Spirit is, but if you have it, then you’ll know.

It’s that special thing inside every traveler, and it remains even when we are not traveling.

What is the Travelers Spirit?

If we are at “home” (home in quotations because everywhere I lay my head is home), it is the “where to next?” attitude. The “we’ll find a way” angle to life’s little hurdles. It’s the “it doesn’t matter what I’m doing now, its what I’ll be doing tomorrow”. This is why many travelers are happy even when having to work unwanted jobs for minimum wage. They know it’s for the greater good, and although relaxed and content, they are ready to pounce when a better opportunity comes along.

To those that don’t travel, the life of a traveler sounds adventurous, glamorous and carefree, and it is these things a lot of the time, but I’ll tell you what, some of life’s most challenging tests have come on my travels.

Its a great way to test relationships (if you can backpack in a foreign country with someone for a month or two and are willing to do it again, you know you’ve found someone special). Sorry, I digress. I’ll get back to the question, what is the travelers spirit?

It’s the “It’ll be alright”, the “We’ll get though it”, the “never give up”, “never lie down and die”, “always working toward the next adventure” attitudes.

*Non conformists, doing it my way, living life. The deep ingrained knowledge and confidence in your self where if sh*t hits the fan, you can just tell yourself “as long as I have food, water and shelter, nothing else matters” (having confidence in yourself when you don’t have one or more of these things is the survivors spirit, something that naturally comes once you have cultivated the travelers spirit, but not all those with a survivors spirit also have the travelers spirit 😉 )

I have met many people on my travels, a lot of them also traveling, that do not posses the travelers spirit. I have also met many non-travelers who have the travelers spirit, the go get’em positive attitude and live and let live view of life, whom have never traveled away from their city.

This is the travelers spirit, you don’t have to be a traveler, and not all travelers have it, and even those that do forget it sometimes. It is a mindset, a curiosity for life, and it can be cultivated!

So is this the travelers spirit, or is it just a bunch of characteristics that I aspire to cultivate? I guess in summary I would say the travelers spirit is this:

It is the live free attitude, the appetite for exploring everything life has to offer, and having the courage to do so. Aka:

Live Free – Explore Life – Be Courageous

*I love to travel. I don’t believe in the conforming to the norm of cultural society.

Get born, get educated, see the world, get a job, get married, have kids, buy a house, get old, return to the earth not for me. I believe success is what you make of it. If all I want to do is travel for the rest of my life then as long as I am traveling, I’m successful.

What characteristics do you think make up the “Traveler’s Spirit”? Share your thoughts in the comments 😀 .

Great article! Learned a lot on reading this article. Btw, I think that traveller’s spirit is the passion of discovering new things it might be a destination or a culture of a locality and sharing this discoveries to the world.

Yeah, I think everyone will have their own personal version of what their travelers spirit is. So much we can learn/discover from each other and the world.

Yeah, I see lots of people traveling with kids. Personally I think it would be quite trying sometimes, but a great way to teach the kids about the world and for family bonding also. If I ever have kids I’ll definitely take them on adventures 🙂 .
